Let's apply queer theory to the way we think about our careers! In this workshop, you'll learn that your career is not just a job with a predefined path. It can be something fluid, flexible, and as expansive as you are!

If the traditional path has never felt quite right to you, this is your excuse to explore what else is possible.

Trash the norms

Since we were kids, we've been taught that a career is one job with a linear path and a ladder to climb. We're given labels and crammed into boxes with definitions that don't really even match who we actually are.

But you were never meant to fit in a box, no one's path is ever actually linear, and you're actually an expansive person who is unlike anyone who has ever existed!

Queer theory asks us to question what is societally normal, the default, or seen as the superior standard. Then gives us a chance to reimagine new expansive possibilities. Let's do it with your career!

Your job is just one thing you do. Your career is so much more and it keeps on growing right with you. In this workshop, you'll question the box you were put inside, spot where you've been following the norm, and start expanding your career to be as vibrant as you are!

What we'll do in 90 minutes

A little yapping and a lot of hands-on working

  1. 1

    Question the labels

    We start with your job title(s) and write down every societal rule that comes attached to them. Then you'll decide which rules to reject on purpose!

  2. 2

    Create a non-linear path

    We'll look at the "normal" linear path for your field and look to see where you've followed along and where you've expanded. Then you'll draw a new, fluid path made just for you!

    Expand your career thinking

    We'll see that your career is so much more than one job. It’s a big, amorphous, ever-expanding blob. Then you'll begin seeing your career to be as vibrant as you!

    Begin your strategy

    We'll learn strategies for pushing through fear and taking action. Then, you'll choose the one career move that feels most exciting to start altering your career this week!

Using queer theory to question the rules we've been taught about work

Most career advice trains you to follow the leader and climb the ladder as fast as possible. This workshop does the opposite!

Hi, I'm Meg!

Since 2018, I've taught adults to unlearn societal norms at conferences, in corporate workshops, and to over 100,000 individuals! I've never thought of my gender, my sexuality, or my career as binary, structured, or able to be boxed. They're amorphous, always expanding, and I get to redefine every career label just for me. That's the energy I bring to this workshop!

My methodology goes against everything you've ever learned about careers, which makes it very different from other programs. I'm here to do what my blend of traits, abilities, values, and interests allows me to: saving the world, one career at a time.

Got questions?

  • It’s a live 90 minute workshop on Zoom! I yap for a bit, then cue up exercises so you can apply the thinking to your own career. You’ll mostly be working in your workbook, not listening to me talk at you the whole time.

  • Nah!! Your workbook arrives by email before the workshop. Bring a pen (or fill it out digitally), a delicious beverage, and a snack.

  • Never! Cameras are totally optional and sharing is always voluntary. You’ll never be randomly called on, and lurking in the chat is a totally acceptable way to participate.

  • Not at all! Everything gets explained, so whether you’re a total beginner or an advanced theorist looking for new ways to think, you’ll be good.

  • You choose the amount! The suggested price is $35, and anything from $15 up is welcome. If you have room, paying more helps someone score a scholarship spot.

  • Every ticket includes the replay and attendees will be sent a link after the intensive to access the replay. However, his intensive will be given again in the future. To be notified, follow my Luma calendar to get notified of future dates.

  • Life happens! You can transfer your ticket to a friend or to a future session anytime up to 24 hours before we start, just email me at boop@meglewis.com.

  • All who are curious about applying queer theory to their careers are welcome!

  • Yes! Each session has 5 scholarship spots. To apply, pick the scholarship ticket on the booking page and request to join. Then email me at boop@meglewis.com, tell me a little about your career and why you want to join, and I’ll let you in if a spot is open.

  • Lots of companies cover workshops like this through a professional development budget, and sometimes all it takes is asking! Tell them it’s a 90 minute session that helps you question the norms in your work and show up with more energy and ideas.   • What Do I Want to Be When I Grow Up? is a 3 hour intensive where we gather your data and choose a career direction. Queer Your Career is a shorter, idea-driven workshop that gives you a new lens (queer theory!) for looking at any career. You won’t choose a new career direction specifically, you’ll see the one you have (or want) in a whole new way. Full Time You is my 12 week deep dive if you ever want to go further.

  • While I do record the workshop for the replay available to all ticket holders, the recording only shows me and my slides. No one else with their cameras on will be recorded, however the chat transcript will be published with the replay. If your privacy is a concern, I would suggest keeping your camera off and stay quiet in the chat, or get silly with it and use an alias and wear a wig!
